There are many poor countries in the world, but one of the most poverty-ridden is right in the Western Hemisphere. Haiti, which shares an island in the Caribbean with the much-more-prosperous Dominican Republic, ranks at the bottom of the economic scale year after year. Many humanitarian organizations work to help the ten million plus people of this nation. One of the largest that seeks to help is Food for the Poor in Haiti.

This is an international organization that depends on private donations for most of its funding. It does receive federal grants from the US government. It provides emergency as well as on-going care to both children and adults in many poverty-ridden areas.

The country has many demographic and historic distinctions. It was discovered by Christopher Columbus. There were native people there, but they were soon virtually eliminated as the fertile areas of the island were planted with sugar cane and other crops. African slaves were imported to work for the colonial masters. Horrific conditions eventually led to a successful slave revolt; Haiti is the only nation founded in this way.

Unfortunately, decades of political unrest and high-level corruption have ravaged the nation. There is only a tiny middle class. Most people live in urban areas with little or no opportunity for education or future advancement. They seldom have access to sanitation, clean water, or adequate medical care. The cycle of poverty continues generation after generation for most Haitains.

Food For The Poor feeds over fifteen thousand people daily at one center in Port-au-Prince. It also provides sewer and clean water to communities. It builds homes for families without shelter, builds and restores schools, opens clinics and hospitals, and helps people start micro-businesses that can earn them a living for the first time in their lives.

It is hoped that by providing more than temporary and immediate help, things can gradually improve for the people of this island nation. If children can survive, get food and medical attention, and get an education, they may be able to rise above the miserable existence they face without help. Less than five percent of the monies this organization receives goes for administration and fundraising expenses; the rest goes directly to humanitarian efforts. Independent groups that evaluate charities give them a high rating.

There are several ways to help this organization. People can make a one-time donation online by check, credit card, or Paypal. They can become a monthly contributor and make an automatic donation each month. They can sponsor an individual child for under forty dollars a month, giving the child food, education, and vocational training. They can build their own webpage to raise money for the charity in their home communities.

More information can be obtained online from the organization itself. You also may hear about Food For The Poor on radio, since many talk shows hold fundraising programs.
