If you're looking for ways to make memories with vacation days or week-ends, consider visiting the Mountain State in the autumn, when the leaves are turning and the air is crisp. West Virginia fall festivals fill the months with music, dance, art, crafts, and more for your enjoyment. Some events last two or more days, so you can schedule a mini-vacation to take in everything. Others are one-day events, some of them small town celebrations and others huge events.

There is sure to be events of interest to all. Whether you like Bluegrass music or jazz, rock or classical, you can find it in WV. Arts and crafts shows and demonstrations draw thousands to the area each year. There are both juried shows and local handiwork booths at street fairs.

Others flock to antique steam engine shows, wine festivals where you can stomp grapes for next year's vintage, pig roasts, apple butter making demos, and a celebration of the Mothman who has to be seen to be believed. Civil War encampments and battles, cannon firing demonstrations, and authentic handmade reproductions attract history enthusiasts. Don't forget that all routes in WV are scenic, so getting to your destination is a treat in itself.

With so many events to choose from, you might have to go by which ones are nearest you. If you are in the Northern Virginia or DC area, the eastern panhandle is not far away. Pennsylvanians can just cross the state line. The western part of the state is even more mountainous than the rest, so you can add high-excitement white-water rafting to the visit, go hiking or bird-watching, hunt and fish, or just enjoy the scenic overlooks.

Events go on all through the spring, summer, and fall; September is full of them. Culturefest 2014 is three-days of music, ethnic food, art, and dance. It's probably the main reason most people visit Pipestem, WV.

The Mercer County Heritage Festival in Princeton is a living history event that goes for three days. There are story tellers, Civil War reenactments, and many vendors, period sutlers, and crafts demonstrations and sales.

Small-town revelry is found at the Nicholas County Potato Festival in downtown Summersville. Enjoy a per pageant, the Fireman's Parade, and activities like a Corn Hole tournament. This town is near the Kirkwood Winery, which later in the month hosts a wine tasting with two-days of craft exhibits, live music, and the chance to stomp grapes in a big pit.

The Mothman Festival celebrates a something-or-other which inhabits the area around Point Pleasant. This legend is told in a pageant, in documentaries shown during the three-day fest, and in music presented by the Mothman Band. There's a museum, as well, to help visitors learn even more about the area and its secrets.

Eat roast pig, learn to clog, see apple butter in the making, and listen to Bluegrass at the Camp Creek State Park Festival. Visit Marlinton for the famous roadkill cook-off. Participate in as many of the almost one hundred activities that happen in one day at the Mountain State Forest Festival, the state's oldest annual event, as you can. Make some WV memories this year.
